Rooting means gaining root (administrator) access to the phone, and lets you modify the system rather than just the apps.
Unlocking means removing the SIMlock that prevents it from running on any but the original network.
Jailbreaking means allowing you to install applications from third-party sources..
Will rooting phone unlock carrier?
Rooting a phone will not carrier-unlock it, but it will let you customize the operating system or install a new one. Both types of unlock are legal, although a SIM unlock often requires help from the network/carrier.
Can you unlock a carrier locked phone?
